Fundamentals of Sustainability

Course Description

The term "sustainable" is often used today, but not widely understood. Professionals in business, government, and non-governmental organizations are often called upon to design sustainable programs and activities, as are individuals concerned about the environment or the future of their communities and ways of life. Fundamentals of Sustainability was developed to introduce these practitioners to the concept and theory of sustainability, and to practical approaches for designing sustainability programs.

Sustainability goals are diverse, arising from our aspirations about business, government, communities, ways of life, and the environment. Sustainability programs emerge from social goals to define what social, economic, and environmental conditions need to be sustained, forecasts of the future, trends that need to be monitored, and actions that are needed to achieve sustainability goals.

Through Fundamentals of Sustainability, students will learn how to establish sustainability values, set sustainability goals, determine the requirements of sustainability efforts, establish programs to monitor sustainability trends, analyze sustainability data, develop management programs to take corrective actions, and prepare sustainability reports.
